David Blitzer, Chairman of the S&P committee, discusses the steady improvement in the housing market. Some of the key points are:

  • The new home buyer, one time tax credit, has offset some of the difficulties people have had getting mortgages.
  • Prices are back to where they were in 2003.
  • Compared to the stock market, housing isn't a bad story.
  • The less expensive home market will be damaged with the end of the first time home buyer credit.
  • There will be continued difficulty in people qualifying for a mortgage.
  • The high end of the market will see some appreciation.
  • Southern California home prices will probably not recover for at at least a decade.
