CQ Press has rated Mission Viejo the safest city in the United States, according to their most recent study, City Crime Rankings: . Mission Viejo has been on the top 10 list since the inception of the Safest City and Metropolitan Area Awards in 1999. This is the first year to reign as number one. Detroit, MI took last place as the most dangerous city. A position it has held since 2003.

The rankings of the safest and most dangerous cities and metropolitan areas are calculated using six basic crime categories: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, and motor vehicle theft. 154 Pearl Street, Laguna Beach's oldest remaining home, has been sold to Tresor Properties for $3.8 million.

Pearl Cottage was built over one hundred years ago with driftwood from boats and shipwrecks. It is Tresor’s intention to preserve the cottage for another one hundred years. Tresor is working closely with the Laguna Beach Heritage Committee to maintain the home’s historic ranking.

The cottage sits on a 5,000 square foot lot, which will be subdivided to allow for construction of a modern contemporary home behind Pearl Cottage. This new construction home will have unobstructed ocean views.
