San Juan Capistrano Events

Every spring San Juan Capistrano celebrates the return of the swallows to the mission with a parade and a variety of community events. This yearly tradition began as a school carnival in the 1930s, and is commonly referred to in Spanish as the "Fiesta de las Golondrinas." The return of the swallows is a popular local folktale, and a natural occurance, marking the passage of the migratory birds from their winter home in Goya, Argentina. A local fall celebration called The Vintage also marks the arrival of the swallows in Argentina.

The Spring Fiesta's most popular events include an Old West dance and costume contest, a kids' pet parade, and a street market. Members of the Fiesta association also hold weekly parties and mixers in the months leading up to the spring parade.
