Located just west of the State Route 73 halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego, Laguna Niguel is often referred to as "The Heart of South County." The community was first developed as an extension of Laguna Beach, and incorporated as its own city in 1989 as a result of steady local growth. New home buyers were attracted to Laguna Niguel for its variety of custom home designs and spacious view properties, carefully woven around undeveloped spaces and foothills.
The Laguna Botanical Gardens in Crown Valley Community Park provide a good example of the city's committment to green space. Spread across 18 acres, plants in the Gardens are organized according to a variety of world regions, including South America, Australia, the Mediterranean, Africa, and Mexico.
Downtown Laguna Niguel is renowned for its uncrowded, carefully planned layout, and variety of unique buildings, including a one million square foot ziggurat building known as the Chet Holifield Federal Building, designed by Los Angeles-based architect William Pereira.
