Laguna Beach History
Laguna Beach was first settled in the 1870s as a collection of ranches and oceanside homesteads. Early residents here transformed the local terrain with extensive landscaping and tree planting projects which quickly set the town apart from other parts of Southern California.
In the late 1800s Laguna Beach became a popular vacation destination, and was home to a stylish hotel and resort called Hotel Laguna. The town's beautiful landscaping and remote coastal location made it popular with artists as well as wealthy travelers from Los Angeles and San Francisco.
In 1902, Los Angeles painter Norman St. Clair arrived here by horse and buggy and began making watercolor pictures of the area's stunning cliff-lined beaches and fresh water lagoons. More artists followed St. Clair, and within a decade the city had built up a thriving arts scene.
Today Laguna Beach is home to more than 75 art galleries, and features high profile annual exhibits such as Art-A-Fair Festival, the Sawdust Art Festival, and Festival of the Arts & Pageant of the Masters. Movie and Television productions are also regularly filmed here.
Laguna Beach is also still known as one of the greenest communities in Orange County. Local residents work hard to protect the city's beautiful natural setting by acquiring and preserving large stretches of undeveloped land as parks and trails.
