Completion of new Trestles Bridge in San Clemente

 Press release: May 14, 2012

COMPLETION OF NEW TRESTLES BRIDGE

The completion of the nearly $8 million San Mateo Creek Bridge, gateway to Trestles Beach and its famous surf break, was formally marked today as the northbound Amtrak Pacific Surfliner No. 769 trundled by on the new bridge. Elected officials, longboard surfers, and Woodie car owners – many attired in Hawaiian shirts -- gathered in the sand below as the 500-ton train passed over the new concrete trestle bridge etched with the name of the beach: T-R-E-S-T-L-E-S. “This project will help to ensure that we keep passengers and goods moving safely along the LOSSAN Coastal Rail Corridor – the second busiest passenger rail corridor in the nation,” noted Jerome Stocks, Chairman of the SANDAG Board of Directors and Mayor of Encinitas. In his youth, Stocks surfed Trestles regularly. North County Transit District purchased the tracks in the northwestern-most corner of San Diego County in 1992 from the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. The aging 858-foot wooden post-and-beam bridge -- built in 1941 and officially known as the San Mateo Creek Bridge – required frequent and expensive maintenance to counteract the effects of age, fire damage, and corrosion. Approximately 43 passenger and freight trains cross the bridge in a given day. Because of the condition of the trestles, trains were required to cross slowly to reduce vibration and wear and tear. The bridge is part of the LOSSAN corridor, which stretches 351 miles from San Luis Obispo, through Los Angeles and Orange County to downtown San Diego. Each year, more than 2.7 million intercity passengers and 4.5 million commuter rail passengers travel the LOSSAN corridor. Those numbers will be increasing as millions of dollars in LOSSAN corridor rail improvements – including extensive double-tracking – are completed in the years ahead. The bridge replacement construction project – paid for with $8 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds – began in fall, 2010. The new bridge replaced the northern 558 feet of the wooden trestles. Workers built the steel reinforced concrete trestles right under the tracks and, once all were in place, shut down the tracks to rebuild the rail bed. The project was completed six months ahead of schedule and 5.5 percent under budget. The tracks are used by Amtrak and Metrolink trains and the freight haulers of the BNSF Railway. Rail traffic is expected to double in the coming years, jumping to 60 trains a day, seven days a week, by 2030.

3 Prime Pizzerias in San Clemente, California

When your palate is craving something simpler than fine dining, or when your schedule is craving something faster than a sit down restaurant, your favorite pizzeria comes to the rescue with reasonable prices and great food. But, there are a lot of pizza places in San Clemente, California, so it can take some time to find your favorite. Skip the disappointment and get your pizza at one of these three top pizzerias in San Clemente; one of these is sure to be your new favorite:

Z Pizza – Many in San Clemente swear by Z Pizza's meatball sandwich; at 10 inches of crusty home-cooked French bread overflowing with succulent meatballs and oozing mozzarella, it's easy to see why. Whether you are in the mood for the more traditional gourmet pizzas, scrumptious salads (you'll love the super crunchy croutons), buttery breadsticks, you'll find all this and more inside a cozy little restaurant where you can always smell what's cooking.Located at 1021 Avenida Pico, San Clemente, CA • (949) 498-3505.

Stuft Pizza and Brewing - If you're looking for your Average Joe pizza place with good beer, good people and great pizza with a notoriously filling stuffed crust, then come on down to Stuft Pizza and Brewing anytime you're in the mood. You'll find several TVs so you can drop in after work and catch some Football, but it makes a great place to bring the family thanks to its great prices and kid-friendly recipes. The Hawaiian pizza is a staff favorite, and said to be especially delicious.Located at 91 Via Pico Plaza, San Clemente, CA • (949) 498-5822.

La Rocco's Pizzeria – Said to have the best New York style pizza in San Clemente, this by-the-slice pizza joint has a great atmosphere and a delicious menu. You'll find many of the classic favorites such as cheese, pepperoni and Hawaiian, but you'll definitely want to try some of their specialty pizzas – The La Rocco and The White are quite tasty. This place gets really busy sometimes, but it's always worth the trip. Easy on the wallet too - 2 really big slices of pizza and a soda will only cost you about $7.Located at 122 South El Camino Real, San Clemente, CA • (949) 366-8890.

You're in luck if you're looking for someplace serene to enjoy the best years of your life, because now is a great time to be looking at real estate in San Clemente; prices are low compared to the surrounding areas, but San Clemente's property value in a vacuum should be equal, so you're getting serious bang for your buck. It's a relatively small city, but that only adds to the tranquil aura that permeates throughout.
Put Yourself To Good Use in San Clemente's Rotary International Club

If you are a business leader living in San Clemente and feel like it's your turn to start giving back, you may be the perfect candidate for the San Clemente chapter of the Rotary International Club. This volunteer organization is made up of men and women who have made themselves a force to be reckoned with in business and community alike, and who are now looking for a way to apply their leverage to better San Clemente, the state of California and the world as a whole.

First things first, you should know that not everyone gets accepted into the San Clemente Rotary international club; it is somewhat exclusive, although they are always itching for new members. That being said, membership in Rotary International is a true humanitarian privilege and it is to be taken seriously. You'll make friends, serve people and have a great time doing it. Instead of trying to make a difference by yourself, you'll be multiplying your impact by pooling your resources with like-minded individuals. An interest in true friendship, strong ethics and an ever present humanitarian streak will help you fit in quite nicely with your fellow Rotarians.

San Clemente Rotary international convenes every Wednesday at 12:00 PM for a sociable lunch meeting at the San Clemente Municipal Golf Course's tasty Iron's in the Fire Restaurant. The biggest (and most fun) event coming up is the San Clemente Rotary's 20th Annual Swing Night at the San Clemente community center. There'll be dinner, dancing and music, plus all revenue from the event will feed straight back into the community through local charities... It will definitely a night to remember, and for a good cause, too. There is no reason to wait if you are interested in pursuing a membership with the Rotary International Club in San Clemente; meetings are fun and events are even better.

The sooner you join San Clemente's Rotary Club, the sooner you'll be able to start giving back to your community like you've never done before. Upon induction most members immediately begin to notice their their own persona begin to shift for the better, as the perspective brought on by membership is one of humility...Suddenly you may find that your priorities feel out of place. For example, one of the groups' world views is the Rotary 4-Way Test, which is a set of guidelines to govern every action you take:

Am I being honest?

Am I being fair?

Am I building goodwill or bettering friendships?

Am I beneficial to those around me?

As you can see, membership in San Clemente's Rotary International Club is more than a simple social group...It's a responsibility, but the rewards in friendships and contentment are well worth the effort. Is it your turn to give back?

One of The Little Spanish Village By the Sea's most beautiful attractions is the Casa Romantica, but its value in San Clemente far surpasses that seen in its lush technicolored flora and panoramic oceanfront view...The Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens is also a non-profit organization that provides entertainment and excitement to the surrounding community, serving over 15,000 couples, friends and families per year. If you've yet to make the trip to Casa Romantica, here are 3 upcoming attractions that are definitely worth getting out of bed for:

2012 San Clemente Student Art Showcase – Come witness San Clemente's most creative young artists at the Tomorrow's Artists Today Exhibition at the Casa Romantica. Come see what the city of San Clemente evokes from its future artists from April 21 to May 31.

The 4 Hottest Surfing Breaks in San Clemente

San Clemente, California, the Little Spanish Village by the Sea, is a city known for world-class surfing and almost every single one of the public beaches in and around the city offer consistently high quality waves. In fact, surfing in San Clemente draws over 1,000,000 people per year to this charming village with some of the most pristine beaches on the Southern California coast line. Here are four of the most popular beaches to get you started surfing in San Clemente:

The Trestles – These secluded yet world-famous collection of surf breaks make up the hotspots most commonly associated with San Clemente. Despite semi-difficult access through a 1.5 mile trail, the beaches are easy to find and often very crowded. There are 3 beaches in the Trestles...Upper Trestles, Middle Trestles and Lower Trestles. Lower Trestles, or Lowers, is said to have the most reliably high quality waves, while Upper and Middle Trestles are known for long, easy to surf waves.

San Onofre – It took less than 10 years from the founding of the city for San Onofre State Beach, or San-O, to become a surfing hotspot in California, much less San Clemente. It is a beautiful beach, but very popular and with a limited parking lot. Definitely make a point to get there early in the day to not only enjoy the water to yourself, but to ensure a parking spot as well. All three of the surf breaks that make up San Onofre – The Point, Old Man's and Dogpatch – are known to be fairly gentle, and Dogpatch in particular is said to be one of the most beginner friendly surf breaks in the entire US.

T-Street – The surf break on T-Street beach is probably one of the most consistent in San Clemente, which in and of itself makes it very popular. Thanks to a fairly sizable underwater reef, the waves that constantly swell towards the shore are shapely and quite surfable, but not quite as beginner friendly as San-O or Doheny.

Doheny Beach – The only other break that compares to San-O's Dogpatch can be found at Doheny Beach. It is a very beginner friendly beach and, as such, surfing etiquette is only loosely maintained. This beach is very popular among the summer tourists who are coming to San Clemente to learn to surf for the first time, however during the rest of the year it doesn't see very much action since it depends on a Southern swell.

Family Assistance Ministries Charity Trail Run

Family Assistance Ministries is hosting this year's Charity Trail Run on May 5th, starting at the end of Camino Del Rio in San Clemente, California. The Charity Trail Run should be a good time for everybody, and participants will enjoy either a 5K or 10k run under beautiful California sunshine (projected forecast) and scenery, as well as the fuzzy feeling that comes with knowing they're supporting Family Assistance Ministries noble goal of helping the undernourished and underprivileged in Orange County, California.

Here's how it works – Charity Trail Runners pay a small entry fee and, in addition, are encouraged to support in any way they can. On top of that, a fair amount of funding raised will come from the sponsorship and vendor opportunities that await small businesses who decide to join in. For example, to be listed as a sponsor of the event will run you from $500 - $2500, depending on which package you choose. The money raised goes towards the Family Assistance Ministries, which gives food, shelter, medical help and financial guidance to the less fortunate of Southern California.

New this year is a chip-timing system for runners so that keeping track of your placement is even easier than before. In addition, this year Family Assistance Ministries has partnered with Outdoor Fitness Adventure Club, so that if you'd like to get in shape real quick before the run you have a place to go to do just that.

Whether you're looking to get in shape and you need a measuring stick against which to track your progress, or you're an experienced runner who loves supporting a good cause and having fun doing it, this year's Charity Trail Run will be an event worth putting your foot forward for. Help Family Assistance Ministries improve San Clemente for the people who can't improve it for themselves.

Cinco de Mayo is a time of celebration - there's no doubt about that - and San Clemente is one place where people take that celebration very seriously. In fact, the city hosts an annual celebration of Cinco De Mayo at Max Berg Plaza, and this year will be the 22nd year in a row it's taken place. The celebration has become more and more popular every year, drawing crowds from all around Orange County and beyond, but it is especially well liked by the locals.

Cinco de Mayo, otherwise known as Mexico's Independence Day, is especially important in San Clemente due to a growing population of Hispanic Americans. This is why Cinco de Mayo in The Little Spanish Village by the Sea is about more than just celebration...It's about celebrating a rich culture and historical background background and honoring the men and women who gave their lives against the French. This is why one of the main features of the celebration is a brief but enthralling narrative of the iconic Battle of Puebia, which is largely identified as the pivotal battle for Mexico's independence.

Even if you're not particularly concerned about the history of Cinco de Mayo, you'll want to come on Saturday, May 5 to Max Berg Plaza to enjoy tons of outdoor activities, a social atmosphere, mariachis and other live music, delicious food, great shopping and more – it's definitely a great day for the family. However, if you're not the over-the-top festivities kind of person, just about every single restaurant or shop in San Clemente will be running specials of some kind, which means that there's no reason at all not to get out and celebrate Cinco De Mayo with the rest of the city...Even if that only means enjoying 99 cent tacos at your favorite Mexican joint. Some of the local favorites are Avila's El Ranchitos, El Mariachi, La Cocina de Ricardo, La Siesta, Pedro's Tacos, Las Golondrinas, El Jefe Cafe and Los Patios. If you've never celebrated Cinco De Mayo before, this is definitely the year to start!
