Errol Kaufman wrote: I grew up in San Clemente until I was a teenager. My father Jack Kaufman was a barber by trade and ran two barber shops in town and a restaurant, "Mack and Jacks Drive-in." It was located on El Camino Real on the south side of town.
I shined shoes in one of my dad's shops and remember very clearly one of his customers. A tall, distinguished elderly man, with a full head of gray hair. His wife dropped him off while she shopped. My dad always greeted him fondly as "old man Cotton." They got along famously, talking about sports, but mostly they spoke of politics. Each visit lasted at least two hours.
Suddenly, Mr. Cotton's visits ceased. After several weeks, his wife came in and explained that Mr. Cotton was ill; too ill to come to the shop. She requested that my Dad go to their house once a week in the evening for his hair cuts, and most of all, to visit with him. My Dad did just that, spending many hours with Old man Cotton, never charging him for a hair cut.
I see I am running out of space...but there is more to this story. I'll continue when I enter the site again.

A few weeks after his passing, Mrs. Cotton showed up one evening at our home on Allesandro St. She explained that Mr. Cotton treasured the time that he spent with my dad and that upon his death that they wanted to give us a bedroom set...if we didn't find the offer insulting. I recall that she was very proper.
Upon her invitation, my dad and I went to the house to look at the set. I was blown away when we entered the compound, a beautiful Spanish Estate overlooking the Ocean. The fantastic antique bedroom set was later delivered to our home by "her people." As we passed through the living room on our way out my Dad spotted a photograph of Joseph Cotton, the actor. She said "yes, he is our son." It wasn't until three years ago that I realized that Old Man Cotton was multimillionaire oilman Hamilton H. Cotton, the money behind the developer of San Clemente and confidant to FDR! I am amazed when I think of this man and the friendship he struck up with my father. My father, with his 8th grade European education. Just goes to show. Makes me proud of both my Father and Old man Cotton.
P.S. Upon her passing, the home was sold to one Richard Nixon, and it became known as the Western White House.
